Robert detailing a messy sex act

Robert Rudy Salinas is a suspected predator involved in the Long Beach, California edition of To Catch a Predator. He is best known for almost surfacing in the Petaluma, California sting and his odd profile picture. He is also notable for his claimed history of talking to underage girls and offering to bring ice cream, when the decoy erroneously requested “Ben and Jerry’s Funky Monkey” which was a misnomer of “Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey”. He is also known for getting caught and arrested again almost twenty years later for the same crime

Biography[]

Robert was a 44 year old married man with children who lived in Orange County, California. He had three kids: sixteen, eleven, and twelve. Robert worked as a Copy Machine, driving around Los Angeles for work for twenty years.

Chat[]

In Robert's first chatlog, he approached an underage girl who claimed to be thirteen and lived in Northern California. The girl then told him she was only thirteen. He lied and claimed to be 41. Robert then began to groom the decoy, telling her she did not look thirteen and had pretty eyes. He asked the girl if she liked camping, jet skiing, etc. He then asked the girl if she had a boyfriend and told her that age was just a number. He asked the girl if she could talk on the phone. He then mentioned how the girl was so mature and noted how he lived near Disneyland in California, if she wanted to visit. Robert stated that he wished he was closer to the girl's age. Robert then asked the girl about her father. He then told the girl he wanted to date. Robert then continued complimenting the girl and told the decoy he previously tried to have sex with a minor. Robert then told the girl he would like to make love and have sex. Robert then proceeded to ask if he could perform oral sex on her and kept asking her to make love. He then told the girl to masturbate.

However, Robert did not come to Petaluma because he was seven hours away. Later, when Dateline came to film its Long Beach sting, the decoy told Robert she was visiting her aunt in Long Beach. Robert, living much closer, decided to come. The decoy told him to bring chicken sandwiches. When mentioning the girl’s body, Robert offers to bring ice cream and lick it off her body. The decoy erroneously requested "Ben and Jerry's Funky Monkey" when it was called "Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey”. He began to express worry that he could go to prison for this; however, he ended up coming to Long Beach. He told the girl he would have to be quick since he had to pick up one of his kids from karate afterward.

Sting[]

Robert arrived at the sting house with what he promised the decoy. The decoy then told him to sit and walked out of the room. After talking with the decoy, Chris Hansen confronted Robert and told him to have a seat. He asked Robert what sandwiches he had brought, to which he replied, "chicken". Robert responded that he had worked at a copy shop for twenty years when Chris asked him where he was employed. Robert claimed he chose to meet the decoy while he was out doing a service call. He acknowledged having conversations with minors and claimed to have children who were eleven, twelve, and sixteen years old.

He then told Chris he was sorry and would get a big wake-up call and not do this anymore. He then told Chris he deserved another chance, thinking Chris was a cop, and said to him, "You guys can monitor me." Chris told him he was with Dateline NBC, and the cameras came out. After being exposed to Dateline, Robert quickly walked out of the sting house with police telling him to get down with his hands and was arrested by police. He was charged with lewd and lascivious acts with a child under fourteen.

Aftermath[]

Robert was convicted on one count of Attempted Lewd or Lascivious Acts with a Child Under 14 Years of Age. He received what Perverted Justice dubbed "The Long Beach Special," which sentenced him to a lifetime registry as a sex offender, probation for three years until 2010, and cleaning up California highways as part of community service. According to unverified sources, his marriage managed to survive the ordeal.[1][2]

In 2024, Chris tried to reach out to Robert with a number but did not hear back from him. Chris then said he was unsure what happened to Robert's relationship with his family. Still, Chris confirmed that Robert has no record or indication of any illegal activity post-sting. Chris said he was never able to prove Robert did have sex with another underage girl before the sting but that he felt like Robert had been doing the illegal things he was caught doing for a long time.

2025 Arrest[]

On January 1, 2025, Robert Salinas met up with an underage girl, roughly between fourteen and fifteen, in Orange County, California.

A criminal complaint was filed against Robert, to the Orange County District attorney's office. Thus, on February 4, 2025, Salinas was arrested and charged with a lewd act on a child, meeting a minor to commit lewd conduct, and contacting a minor with the intent to commit a sex offense, all felonies, for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor, and Salinas has pleaded not guilty. [3][4]

Robert was due in court March 5th for a court hearing, and remained in custody.[5]

Hansen then made another Predators I’ve Caught featuring Tiktok star JD Delay, describing how some of these guys cannot be reformed, and Robert Salinas was one of them. They went into detail about Robert's case, which involved him meeting a fifteen-year-old at a local park where they had sexual intercourse in his car. When confronted by police, Robert tried lying, only to admit to everything, such as meeting the girl and another potential victim on a chat site before liaising for a sexual encounter. Then, they discussed about what goes on in these guys’ heads, and JD admitted you cannot stop these guys; people like Robert Salinas are committed to these crimes, and it is like a premeditated addiction they cannot control.[6]

As of April 2025, according to Robert's Megan's Law profile, he is not incarcerated and his current address is listed as his home address, meaning he was likely allowed to make bail.
